community building and content creation from scratch

LIKELION, originally founded in South Korea, is a student-led tech entrepreneurship community that empowers students to tackle real-world problems and transform their ideas into viable services and products through programming.

Although UIUC has a strong presence of programming organizations and Korean student communities, there was no group that targeted both. Alongside a close friend, I partnered with LIKELION US to establish a new chapter at UIUC, building it entirely from the ground up, focusing on generating awareness, developing a clear visual identity, and recruiting members through strategic content.

As a Korean American, I was motivated to create a space where Korean students could connect while also gaining value through shared interests in entrepreneurship and technology. The goal was to foster both community and skill development within a collaborative, growth-oriented environment.

Key Decisions

  1. Targeting the right audience and platform

We recruited through a campus-wide Facebook group for Korean students, leveraging familiarity with the LikeLion brand in Korea. This helped lower the barrier to trust for a brand-new chapter and establish credibility within the community.

  2. Built a consistent visual presence

I designed and managed all visual content for @likelion_uiuc, including recruitment materials and program overviews. The content maintained LikeLion’s global brand identity while adapting it for a U.S. campus audience.

  3. Creating content that informs, not just announces

Rather than simple promotions, our posts explained what LikeLion is, what members would do, eligibility requirements, and the semester structure. This provided enough context for students to confidently engage with a new and unfamiliar organization.
